Diet Induced Obesity (DIO) Diets will stimulate the growth of fatty tissue. This is necessary in the study of various diseases, including diabetes and insulin resistance. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. The cause of diabetes is not clear, but it is believed that obesity is one of the factors associated with diabetes. High fat diets modified from the formulas developed by Dr. Richard Surwit at Duke University have been used extensively for the study of obesity and diabetes.
